Hugo Buffs defeat Alumni 1958

From Hugo Daily News 1958
For the first time since the series began eight seasons ago, the Hugo High Buffaloes beat the Alumni, 20-12, in their annual football clash here Saturday night and gained added incentive for their regular season opener against Madill next week.

The highschool, shaking off an Alumni touchdown a minute and seven seconds after the opening kickoff, surged ahead to stay 8-6 near the end of the first quarter.

The entire squad of 43 Alumni players saw action and their coach, Simon Parker, made frequent lineup changes throughout the game, substituting by platoons most of the time.

The Alumni scored their quick touchdown when end Jack Cooley leaped on a high school fumble on the one-yard line on the second play of the game. From there, Don Short cracked across for the score. Leon Lomax' extra point kick sailed wide of the goal-post.

The highschool scored its initial touchdown late in the first quarter. The Buffaloes began on the 33 following the after-touchdown kickoff. With a 15-yard penalty against the Alumni for holding, third-down runs of 11 and 12 yards by tailback William Bohannon that picked up vital first downs, and a 17-yard sweep around end by Claudie Griggs on a reverse, the Buffaloes made their way into the shadows of the Alumni goal but were repelled and had to surrender the ball on downs.

The Alumni, with lots of depth but short on wind, moved out to the 9 but another 15 yard penalty, one of five the grads were assessed, shoved them back to the one, where a punt-away sour and set up the highschool touchdown. Howard Milburn, back to do the kicking, got a high snap from center and consequently had to get the boot away in hurried-fashion. End Jerry Lawrence partially blocked the kick and the ball fluttered at a sharp angle toward the sideline where guard Robert Ferrier recovered for the highschool on the one-foot line; Ike Parker scored on a quarterback sneak down to the score again. The Buffaloes attempted a pass for the extra point & fell incomplete. A roughing penalty gave the Buffaloes another try, and Parker ran it over to make it 8-6.

The Alumni moved back in to strong contention in the third period when they scored their second touchdown. Starting at the 50 after the Buffaloes had punted, the Alumni sent Short on a 29 yard gallop to the 21. From there, Short triggered a pass to quarterback Hal Lambert that picked up the rest of the yardage needed for a touchdown. The Alumni could have tied it had the extra point try been successful, but Bobby Brous was stopped just shy of the goal on a running play by Parker.

With the Alumni now breathing down their necks, the Buffaloes retaliated with another touchdown 8½ minutes from the end of the game to widen the gap to 20-12. Bohannon scored from five yards out to climax a drive that started on the highschool 40. A 15 yard penalty against the Alumni, plus a 24 yard scamper by Griggs on another reverse, were the key factors in the drive. A try at passing for the extra points was unsuccessful.

The Alumni had one scare left for the highschool rooters before the game was over. With 38 seconds to play Short passed to end Doyle Hunter, who had "hid out" near the sideline on the sleeper play, and Hunter went all the way, the play covering 81 yards. But the play was erased since the sleeper play is no longer legal. The new rule states that all offensive players must be within 15 yards of the ball when it is snapped.

Four seasoned veterans—tackles Vaughn Patterson and Connie Pratt, and boards Howard Mashburn and Ferrier—anchored the highschool line throughout the game. Parker, backing the line, and Lawrence, Wyndol Fry and Jim Webb, a sophomore, also turned in commendable jobs. Parker, intercepted three passes.
