Broken Bow's air-minded Savages won an important 30-12 victory over the Hugo Buffaloes here Friday night and cinched a tie for the district 5-A championship.

The victory was a big step for Broken Bow in its bid for the district crown. The Savages can win the title outright next week if they can hurdle Idabel, then would get a crack at Ada's awesome Cougars in a bi-district clash. The Cougars, ho-hum winners of the state title the past few years, have already tucked away the 6-A pennant without flexing their muscles too much.

Idabel is still in contention for the 5-A crown. With last week's rude 6-0 jarring by Hugo the only blemish on its record in district play, Idabel can become co-champion with a victory over Broken Bow, which now is 3-0 in the league standings. In the event that happens, the decision as to which team plays Ada will probably ride on the flip of a coin.

The Savages, displaying a deadly aerial attack against the Buffaloes that saw them complete 7 of 11 passes for 156 yards with quarterback Melvin Cavander doing most of the firing, traveled the air-lanes for their first touchdown 2½ minutes into the second quarter. Cavander pitched a strike to halfback Granville Chandler on a pass play that covered 35 yards. A play before, Cavander had tossed to O. G. Poole, right end, for a 51-yard gain to the Hugo 2, Claudie Griggs hauling him down for Hugo at that point, but a clipping penalty brought the Savages back to the 35. Unruffled by the bad break, Cavander rifled the touchdown pass on the very next play. Another pass on the conversion try was batted down.

A few minutes before, the Buffaloes had put up their stoutest defensive stand of the night after the Savages had reached the Hugo 17 after starting on the Broken Bow 25 following a punt. The long gainer in the march was a 30 yard pass from Cavander to Don Metcalf, left end.

At the 17 Vaughn Patterson and Connie Pratt stacked up a play after a gain of only a yard. Mike Parker and Wyndol Fry downed Chandler for no gain, and on third down sophomore Clarence Morgan and John McCain halted another running play for no gain. A fourth down pitchout was fumbled back to the 28 and Hugo took over. The Buffaloes couldn't move for a first down and had to punt, Broken Bow getting possession at its own 30. From there the Savages began moving toward their first touchdown, which was climaxed by the 35-yard Cavander to Chandler scoring pass.

Broken Bow struck for its second touchdown with 2:17 to play before halftime. Hugo got the ball at its own 15 following a punt, and a holding penalty shoved the Buffaloes into a deep hole back on the one. They had to punt and the Savages got the ball at the Hugo 24. On the first play, Chandler streaked down the middle for the touchdown to put his team ahead 12-0. Cavander passed for the extra points and it was 14-0 at halftime.

Chandler gave the Savages more breathing room when he raced 75 yards with the second-half kickoff to put the Buffaloes behind 20-0 and deal their hopes for a comeback a crushing blow. Poole caught a pass from Cavander on the conversion try to make it 22-0.

With 1:36 to play in the third quarter the Savages added their final score with a fourth-down pass that covered 20 yards.

The proceedings began when the Buffaloes were forced to punt and Broken Bow started on the Hugo 38. The Savages moved to a first down on the Hugo 8, but almost didn't make it to paydirt. On the first play Fry stacked up a jab into the line after a gain of 3 yards. On second down, Howard Mashburn dumped Cavander for a 15-yard loss back on the 20. A third down pass failed, but on fourth down Cavander fired a touchdown aerial to halfback Biff Teel. A pass also accounted for two extra points and it was 30-0.

Hugo then came back with its two touchdowns. A sophomore, Moose Hampton, gave the Buffaloes their first good opportunity for a touchdown by intercepting a pass on the Broken Bow 35 and returning it to the 29. The Buffaloes moved to the 15, and from there Robert Ferrier scored on a tricky guard around play. A pass on the conversion try was unsuccessful.

Fry recovered a fumble on the Broken Bow 40 for Hugo with five minutes to go and the Buffaloes moved to the 19 on two passes from Parker to Kenneth Brown, left end, but the threat bogged down.

A little while later, however, sophomore Jim Webb covered a fumble for the Buffaloes at the Broken Bow 17 and this time they moved in for the score. Parker carried over from the one for the touchdown. A pass play on the conversion try failed.
